IPAWS is a national alert system managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It allows emergency officials to send urgent public warnings through multiple communication systems including:

- Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) to cell phones
- Emergency Alert System (EAS) for television and radio
- NOAA Weather Radio alerts
These alerts are used only for significant emergencies that pose an immediate threat to life or safety.
